Description

This workshop focuses on Motivational Interviewing (MI) concepts, primarily in the context of addressing diabetes prevention behaviors and diabetes self-management behaviors. The overall objective is to inform participants in the person-centered skills of MI to help facilitate not only effective individual and group conversations about goal-setting and behavior change for lifestyle behaviors, but also to foster a cohesive group dynamic. Participants will engage in discussions, real-play exercises, active learning activities, and role-play in small groups with MI-expert feedback and coaching for skills development for use with people with diabetes and with other practitioners on the DPP and DSMES teams.

Whether you're a DCES/CDCES, National DPP Lifestyle Coach, or practitioner focused on weight management initiatives, this training has something for you. The conversational climate fostered in the training brings a comfortable place to learn new strategies for helping individuals decide to engage in health behaviors known to impact outcomes. The training also includes a segment on use of MI in groups; whether your groups are DSMES, DPP or weight management, this segment also addresses MI-based strategies for recruiting and retaining individuals in your programs. Role play with feedback and coaching is included and resources are provided in the training that contribute to learning and can also be useful indirect applications with persons with or at risk for diabetes and related cardiometabolic conditions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
-- Describe the righting reflex and contrast it with the spirit of Motivational Interviewing.
-- Identify the participant-centered MI communication principles and micro skills needed for conversations about comprehensive disease management or prevention that includes health behavior change.
-- Apply appropriate examples of the MI communication principles and micro skills in a written dialogue for a diabetes management or prevention conversation with a non-adherent participant.
-- Demonstrate MI communication and micro skills in group case role-play exercises regarding health behavior changes participants need to manage or prevent diabetes.
