Course Format

The course is a two-day onsite course that requires online self-study pre-work for completion. This pre-work will take approximately seven hours to complete and should be done before arriving onsite for the start of the course. The program is facilitated by three ADCES trainers and incorporates lecture, case studies, and interactive group work.

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

• Assess stage of change and motivation to change.
• Review the key components of effective behavior change goals using the SMART acronym.
• Describe prevalence and incidence of diabetes.
• Identify resources for and aspects of planning, implementing, and evaluating a DSMES program.
• Distinguish pathophysiological differences between prediabetes, type 1, type 2, and GDM.
• Compare differences between DKA and HHS, as well as possible treatments.
• Formulate individualized goals of therapy based on patient-specific characteristics.
• Differentiate acute and chronic complications.
• Create a drug therapy plan that includes blood pressure and dietary changes, for people with diabetic nephropathy.
• Summarize approaches to pain management and describe autonomic nephropathy conditions.
• Identify and problem solve barriers to change and high-risk situations.
• Discuss current and new therapeutic options for the treatment of diabetes and obesity.
• Determine optimal therapeutic regimens for patients with diabetes to achieve individualized cardiometabolic goals.
• Select appropriate insulin preparations for patients based on the pharmacokinetic profile, acquisition cost, and individualized glycemic goals.   

Activity Type

This is an application-based activity. This 25-CE course includes online coursework, in-class presentations, discussion, and question and answer periods.

Intended Audience

This learning is designed for individual or groups of diabetes care and education specialists, including RNs, RDs, Pharmacists, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physician Assistants, MDs, and other health care providers interested in staying up to date on current practices of care for their patients with diabetes and other related conditions.

Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists

To satisfy the requirements for renewal of certification for the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE), continuing education activities must be diabetes related and approved by a provider on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers (www.cbdce.org). CBDCE does not approve continuing education. The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers.

Board Certified Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM)

ADCES is the administering body for the Advanced Diabetes Management credentials. Continuing education programs offered by ADCES can be used toward fulfilling BC-ADM Certification and recertification requirements.

Other Health Professionals

It is the responsibility of each participant to determine if the program meets the criteria for re-licensure or recertification for their discipline

Refunds

ADCES will provide refunds (less a $200.00 administrative fee) for registrations cancelled through April 16. No refunds will be issued starting April 17.
