Description
DSMES has been part of the recommended standards of care for diabetes for many years. There is substantial evidence that DSMES has significant benefits for people with diabetes. Unfortunately, referrals to and attendance at DSMES sessions are not optimal. Incorporating DSMES into HEDIS (Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set) measures could ensure more consistent and quality care for individuals managing diabetes. It is time for DSMES to be included in this performance improvement indicator for medical providers. This presentation will dive into strategies to bring DSMES to the forefront of care, and the knowledge to become an active diabetes advocate.
Learning Outcome
The overall goal of this activity is to empower learners with the knowledge and strategies needed to advocate for the inclusion of DSMES in national quality measures.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Identify performance improvement indicators for healthcare providers
• Develop an advocacy plan to engage stakeholders, (NCQA and Diabetes Senate Caucus), to support inclusion of DSMES in national quality measures
• Describe the value of DSMES attendance requirements in HEDIS measures on long-term diabetes self-management outcomes
Activity Type
This is a knowledge-based learning activity. This
60-minute online session includes a presentation followed by a question-and-answer period.
