Description

This program will review the foundation, and statistics related to health literacy/numeracy. Health literacy components are multifactorial and include oral, eHealth and print literacy as well as cultural and conceptual knowledge. With the various medication delivery options, technology devices, and essential skills needed for dose calculations, people with diabetes can be directly impacted. Various tools and approaches will be shared to help diabetes care and education specialists navigate health literacy for optimal success.

Learning Outcome

Diabetes care and education specialists will report increased awareness of key health literacy considerations, particularly as they relate to diabetes, and will apply health literacy-sensitive approaches when working with individuals affected by the condition.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
• Define health literacy and its key components.
• Discuss how health literacy affects health outcomes, self-management, and overall well-being in people with diabetes.
• Identify at least one effective communication strategy tailored for individuals with low health literacy.

This activity is designed for individual or groups of diabetes care and education specialists, including nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, nurse practitioners, physicians, PAs, social workers, Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES®), Master Certified Health Education Specialists (MCHES®), and other health care providers interested in staying up to date on current practices of care for people with diabetes and other related conditions.

Katherine O’Neal is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacy: Clinical and Administrative Sciences at the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy and Adjunct Professor with the College of Medicine Department of Internal Medicine. Her clinical practice is with Internal Medicine primary care focusing on chronic disease states, especially diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and asthma. Dr. O’Neal is also a member of the Harold Hamm Diabetes Center. She is a certified diabetes care and education specialists and board certified in advanced diabetes management as well as a fellow of the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy from The University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy and completed a PGY1 in Community Practice with USA Drug and The University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy and a PGY2 in Ambulatory Care with The University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy in Tulsa, OK. Dr. O’Neal received her Masters in Business Administration from the University of Tulsa, Tulsa, OK. Her research interests include patient empowerment and health literacy.

ADCES is the administering body for the Advanced Diabetes Management credentials. Continuing education programs offered by ADCES can be used toward fulfilling BC-ADM Certification and recertification requirements.
