Diabetes Education Accreditation Program (DEAP)

Obtain diabetes education accreditation, and receive reimbursement for diabetes self-management education and support.

DEAP for DSMES

Accreditation & Reimbursement for DSMES

If you’re a health care professional who sees people with diabetes in your practice setting, supports them by gaining knowledge through continuing education (CE), and provides diabetes care and education services with reimbursement, you can become accredited through the Diabetes Education Accreditation Program (DEAP).

As one of two national accrediting organizations for Medicare, ADCES® offers full support to health care professionals who provide diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) and want to receive reimbursement for DSMT (diabetes self-management training), the Medicare benefit available to all Medicare beneficiaries with a diagnosis of diabetes.

DEAP Standards & Requirements

Initial Application

DEAP Initial Application Toolkit

To help you with the application process, view our detailed DEAP Initial Application & Audit Guide that provides step-by-step guidance on completing and submitting your initial application.

The standard DEAP initial application fee is $1,100 for all types of programs applying for accreditation.

For programs with multiple service locations or virtual delivery, please contact [email protected] for more details on pricing options.

After you start your DEAP initial application in the DEAP Dashboard and pay the application fee, you’ll receive access to additional resources including webinars, guides and technical assistance to support you throughout the diabetes education accreditation and application process. The best time to start your application is:

1. When you’re already delivering DSMES and have most of the documentation ready to submit.

2. When you’re getting started with DSMES and need more support and guidance about the documentation required.

Once you’ve completed and submitted your initial application, you’ll receive an email confirmation, and the DEAP team will review it for completeness and quality.

After our DEAP team reviews your application, if items are missing or they don’t meet the standard, you’ll receive guidance via email regarding additional documentation or corrections needed. During this time, we may send you requests for more information needed to approve your application. Depending on how complete your application is, the process can take between 3 and 9 weeks.

Once your application has been approved, you’ll receive an invitation to schedule your virtual orientation.

This is a checklist of items that you’re required to submit with your DEAP initial application. You’ll also find additional page links and resources in the DEAP Dashboard when you begin your application.

DSMT Reimbursement

Reimbursement for DSMT

Medicare covers up to 10 hours of DSMES (Medicare’s DSMT / diabetes self-management training benefit) as a once-in-a-lifetime benefit. Medicare covers up to two hours of DSMT with a new referral every year after that. Many state Medicaid plans and commercial insurers cover DSMT offered by accredited programs.

To receive reimbursement for DSMT services, complete all the steps below.

Be sure the National Provider Identifier (NPI) number approved as a Medicare Part B Supplier used for billing DSMT aligns with the name on your DEAP certificate. To check, search the NPI Registry.

Search the NPI Registry

Send a copy of your DEAP certificate to your Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC). To do this, work with your billing specialist. Learn more about what’s a MAC on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services page.

Train your DSMES team to use the correct billing codes. DSMT Billing Codes: G0108 for individual sessions and G0109 for group sessions. One unit is equal to 30 minutes.

Check with your billing specialist to ensure DSMT claims are getting paid.
