Description

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a broad term for the spectrum of disease within the liver. It is estimated that more than 70% of people with type 2 diabetes have MAFLD. This session will review concepts of diabetes care and comprehensive medication management in people with diabetes and MAFLD. Case scenarios will be utilized to apply recommendations from clinical practice guidelines, and findings from primary literature on evaluation and management of MAFLD in people with diabetes. The role of the diabetes care and education specialist will be discussed utilizing the ADCES 7 Self-Care Behaviors^®.

Learning Outcome

The overall goal/intended outcome is to enhance diabetes care and education specialists' understanding of screening recommendations for MAFLD and to encourage appropriate referrals for adults with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes who are at higher risk for significant liver disease. Additionally, the program will review and analyze medication management recommendations from clinical practice guidelines, equipping participants with evidence-based strategies to effectively integrate into clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Evaluate the relationship between diabetes and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD)
• Determine guideline-based recommendations on the evaluation and therapeutic management of MAFLD in people with diabetes, when given a specific scenario
• Summarize the role of a diabetes care and education specialist in person-centered care among people with diabetes and MAFLD

Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) As a Jointly Accredited Organization, the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.0 continuing education credits.

To receive a Statement of Credit you must participate in the full activity and complete an evaluation.

Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists

To satisfy the requirements for renewal of certification for the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE), continuing education activities must be diabetes related and approved by a provider on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers (www.cbdce.org). CBDCE does not approve continuing education. The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers.

Board Certified Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM)

CBDCE is the administering body for the Advanced Diabetes Management credential. Continuing education programs offered by ADCES can be used toward fulfilling BC-ADM certification and recertification requirements.

Other Health Professionals

It is the responsibility of each participant to determine if the program meets the criteria for re-licensure or recertification for their discipline.
