Welcome to our coverage of the 2013 AADE Annual Meeting in Philadelphia! Two of our bloggers are onsite and will be posting their thoughts and reactions to the sessions and events here at the conference, while three of our bloggers will be covering the Virtual Meeting from their homes.

Our second baby was born this year and it makes it very difficult to travel out of town with a newborn and toddler for several days. I am so thankful for technology and being able to enjoy the comforts of home while getting continuing education credit through the AADE Virtual Meeting. This will be my third year attending the virtual meeting and it is great to catch a glimpse of one of my favorite conferences, the AADE Annual Meeting. This year, I’m excited at the variety of topics available on-demand: weight management programs, shared medical appointments, motivational interviewing, lipid guidelines, national standards for diabetes education, glucose management with postprandial hyperglycemia, understanding your audience in education, medication safety, and medication updates. I plan to watch all of them and will post about some of my favorites. The blog will be updated very frequently next week!

I will not be able to the AADE13 meeting in Philadelphia, but I am excited to listen to great presentations through the virtual meeting. Among the keynote speakers, I am definitely looking forwarding to the “The 5As of Obesity Management” by Dr. Arya Sharma. A majority of the patients with diabetes, especially type 2, struggle with being overweight or obesity issues. This information from this presentation would be useful for all practitioners. Non-specific information or generic statements are recommended to patients for obesity management. Based on the objectives, this approach to obesity management will allow proper education on the disease, risks versus benefits and setting a SMART goal to achieve the long-term goal. I like the approach with the 5As, as it is very similar to the approach to smoking cessation. There are ten relevant and hot topics chosen for the education on-demand sessions for the virtual meeting. Among these choices, I will definitely be listening to “Strike the Spike: Strategies for Managing Postprandial Hyperglycemia.” I hope to gain some insight on different clinical approaches to encourage postprandial monitoring for certain patients in order to achieve better glycemic control. I am also excited about “Alternative Models-Shared Medical Appointments” due to the constant change in the medical world. As the implementation of the Affordable Health Care Act approaches, every healthcare professional needs to think about how to adapt and change practice model to offer or incorporate new approaches for the best patient care. As a last comment, I am looking forward to listening to the all the pharmacy presentations (Go Pharmacists!) about tobacco dependence, lipid guidelines, monitoring medication safety, and choose the right drug at the right time.

Once again, I’ll pack up my bag and head to the AADE annual meeting. It is such a great event to network with colleagues, discover all the new products that may make our patients lives just a bit easier and learn the best evidence based medicine for the diabetes educator. After many years of practice in the outpatient setting, I am redirecting some of my work to the inpatient side. I am delighted to see all the sessions offered to share tools for maximizing inpatient management and to compare our teams’ efforts to incorporate basal bolus regimens and insulin pump therapy in the inpatient side to others making the same changes. I hope you are planning to attend, and if not, will join in on the virtual conference offered through AADE.

I am looking forward to two major aspects of AADE 13. One is the potential of learning and the other is spending time with other educators. Before each day begins, I will look through all of the programming. If a topic or presenter interests me, I will plan to get to the talk early. Some of the really hot topics with well-known presenters can fill. Last year, the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support were hot off the press. There was a session on the updates and changes presented by some of the authors. The room filled to capacity, there was an overflow room, and an additional session added on a subsequent day. There are so many great sessions planned with amazing speakers this year! I am also looking forward to seeing past friends and colleagues and meeting new ones. It can happen anywhere; at the poster reception, in the exhibit hall, during a social event, in the hallways, at an educational session, at the Silent Auction, or at the Walk/Jog-a-Thon. It is great to be surrounded by so many passionate, amazing individuals. You can’t help but to leave the annual meeting energized to be a great diabetes educator!

Can you believe that it is already time for the 2013 Annual Meeting?? What a great line up of speakers – it seems that no matter what you might be interested in, AADE has got you covered. From incredible key note speakers to the plethora of educational sessions, there is something wrong if you leave without some new information to help you with the everyday management of your patients. And then there are the exhibitors – ready to impress you with new technologies and items to improve your patients’ lives. And don’t forget to take some time to see the city – from the LOVE art to touring historical sites important in the birth of the USA – you will be wowed at every turn. So get ready to be energized, enthused, empowered and encouraged in our on-going fight against diabetes!!
