Hypoglycemia Awareness and Prevention an AADE Goal

Mar 30, 2018, 00:00 AM

By: Joanne Rinker, MS, RD, CDE, LDN, FAADE
AADE Director of Practice and Content Development

Joanne_RinkerIn 2016 AADE recognized the impact of serious hypoglycemic events as an important public health issue, and supported the work published by the Endocrine Society, “Hypoglycemia Quality Collaborative Strategic Blueprint,” which is an actionable document to help prevent hypoglycemia.

In 2017, AADE was included in the creation of a consensus report on standardized diabetes outcomes, beyond HbA1C. This report includes recommended standard definitions for hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, time-in-range when using continuous glucose monitoring, diabetic ketoacidosis and patient-reported outcomes. Specific to this topic, three levels of hypoglycemia are defined. I encourage you to read the full report!

Currently, the AADE Research Committee is interested in identifying the impact of diabetes educator interventions in preventing hypoglycemic events across the age spectrum and in all types of diabetes. The body of literature is extensive, and the review has been a journey. The systematic review will look at experimental design, interventions, and outcomes, with the influence of the educator, and we are excited that they will report on their review at the AADE18 conference in Baltimore this upcoming August 17-20.
