Important Update from CBDCE: Temporary Changes Extended for Practice Experience
in Diabetes Care and Education Requirement for Initial CDCES Certification

To address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the ability of health care professionals pursuing the Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist® (CDCES®) credential to accrue practice experience in diabetes care and education (DCE), the CBDCE Board of Directors recently approved an extension of the temporary changes to the professional practice requirement relating to DCE for initial CDCES certification.
The extension of the temporary changes, originally effective on April 1, 2021, was approved May 2022 by the CBDCE Board of Directors.
With the May 2022 decision, DCE Professional Practice Experience Requirement Changes are identified below:
1. For applications submitted through 2024*, minimum DCE experience needed in prior 12 months reduced from 400 hours to 200 hours; and
2. For applications submitted through 2026**, minimum 1000 hours (or 2000 hours for unique qualifications pathway) of DCE experience needed can be accrued over a longer period of time. The time frame is increased from 4 years from application date to
5 years from application date.
