Tools to help with weight loss

Jan 8, 2013, 01:00 AM

Several of the recent blog posts focused on new year's resolutions. Healthy eating and losing weight are both one of the top resolutions. Sometimes it’s a little more fun when you can buy a tool or a little gadget to help you stick to your goal.

Reducing portion sizes to help lose weight and control blood sugar is one of the most simple goals for patients. They don’t necessarily need to master carb counting or reading labels. They can start by reducing the portion sizes of foods they are already eating and probably find that they will start losing weight and post meal blood sugars improving. It may not solve all the nutrition challenges, but it’s a very simple and easy start.

A couple years ago at the AADE Annual Meeting, I saw the Meal Measure portion plate and thought that was a  cute idea to help people stay within reasonable portions on their dinner plate. It is a silicone mold that you put on your dinner plate as a guide and then remove after you have served all your foods. The cavities are one cup portions and a half line inside the cup for 1/2 cup portions.
