An update from AADE14

You can feel the energy in the air!! Diabetes educators from around the world are gathered for 4 full days of education and excitement. I love the tagline for AADE14 – REFRESH.RECHARGE.RENEW.
One of the things I look forward to each year is seeing all the attendees – from the new educators with looks of awe and being a bit overwhelmed, to those with a few years under their belts who take it all in stride. I decided to interview a few attendees to get their opinions of the meeting so far.
Peggy from Emory/St. Joseph’s in Atlanta has been to meetings in the past. She has not been able to attend for a few years and so is excited to be back. She is looking forward to meeting all the objectives of the tagline – She is looking forward to being REFRESHED with new information – especially when it comes to all the new medications. She feels pretty certain she will be RECHARGED with new teaching techniques and ideas. She also enjoys the energy of the presenters, the people and the exhibit which will get her “fired up” and ready to go back and take on her task with RENEWED energy. She found yesterday’s session on Gut Bacteria very interesting and looks forward to getting more information which she can share with her patients. Specifically about how dietary changes can make a significant impact on her patient’s weight, and improving their glucose and lipid control.
Christine is an RD/CDE from St. Augustine, Florida. She does inpatient and outpatient education as well as community events. She has attended meetings in the past but is excited that AADE14 is in her local area this year. She has already been RECHARGED by the keynote speaker Dr. Oberlander who addressed the Future of Healthcare Reform. She feels his presentation was of particular interest in that he targeted the real problem many of us are facing daily - that many patients that are uninsured. She is RECHARGED to encourage her friends and colleagues to vote!! Christine is also excited about visiting the exhibits, seeing old friends and learning what is new. Much of her excitement on it being fairly local, is that since she was able to drive here- she has a car and can haul many “goodies” back to give to her patients!
I also ran into a colleague of mine from the Texas Hill Country outside of Kerrville. Sandra is an RN/CDE and works for a physician group that seems to keep her quite busy. She is looking forward to being REFRESHED by just getting out of the office for a while and being around others who share her passion and enthusiasm for diabetes education. She is getting her batteries RECHARGED with new information on teaching techniques and products to make her patients' lives easier. She expects to return to work next week with a RENEWED sense of energy and enthusiasm.
Well – off to my next session. Talk to you soon.
