Refresh your skills at AADE15

AADE15

Here we are in the heat of summer 2015!  We have had some really weird and not so great weather around many parts of the country. Because of focusing on these types of issues, our patients (as well as ourselves) may need to be reminded of the importance of managing our health. I totally understand that when life-threatening events such as flooding, fires, high winds or extreme heat occur, action must be taken to preserve our families, homes, properties and businesses. We may need to be reminded that our health is also a major concern and to not forget about eating properly and taking our medications.

Speaking of your own health maintenance and enhancement, AADE15 is next month! The theme of this year’s meeting is Innovation and Engagement. Who among us does not need more of that? Using a variety of educational formats, AADE15 will offer informative sessions with dynamic, engaging speakers. There will be General Sessions to kick off each morning with Keynote speakers to set the day’s agenda by sharing their knowledge and experiences in leadership, research and innovations. Then, attendees will move on to their choice of advanced-level Masters Classes featuring multiple content experts providing a comprehensive look at topics and/or issues. Breakout sessions will feature the application of principles and best practices – often from our peers who are out in the field managing patients with diabetes on a daily basis. Research sessions are offered for those looking for cutting edge information and how that new information can be applied to clinical practice. Take a look at the Corporate Symposia which are planned and presented by the corporate leaders for the latest in research and development.

For new innovations, services and a little “hands-on time” do not miss the Exhibit Hall where you can see, taste, smell and touch the newest services and products to make our patients’ (along with our own) lives easier. This is my favorite place, as I love the gadgets and gizmos that can make a tedious, demanding disease a bit more tolerable. We as Diabetes Educators are often our patients’ first line of information and support so the Exhibit Hall is a great place to stock up on new skills.

Be sure and plan for some leisure time to explore the great city of New Orleans, where you will find a plethora of exciting cultures, foods, shops and people to recharge your personal battery. You may want to consider a unique souvenir such as a temporary tattoo to share with your close friends when you get back home. Just a fun thing to do while in the Big Easy. No worries – it will wash off after you have had some fun with it!

Be sure to make plans to attend AADE15. For more information go to aade15.org. While on the AADE website, take time to explore their new look– it’s been redesigned with new features and easier navigation for diabetes educators.

See you in New Orleans!
