Description

The Diabetes Care and Education Specialist Certificate Program is geared towards healthcare providers who have achieved an advanced body of core knowledge and skills related to diabetes education and/or management above that which is required by the profession of origin. This certificate incorporates those providers who meet the academic, professional, and experiential criteria to qualify for and maintain the CDCES credential. It covers the ADCES competencies, as well as material geared towards setting up a practice.

Learning Outcome

CDCES’ will be fully trained on the ADCES competencies of care and will have an increased knowledge of the best practices to develop care plans for the person with diabetes.

Intended Audience

This application-based activity is designed for diabetes care and education specialists. They are experts who, as integral members of the care team, provide collaborative, comprehensive, and person-centered care and education to people with diabetes and related conditions. This includes, but is not limited to, those with the credential CDCES (certified diabetes care and education specialist) or BC-ADM (board certified advanced diabetes management) and similar roles specializing in diabetes.

Certificate of Completion

Upon completion of the program, you will receive a Certificate of Program Completion. The certificate provides recognition for your continuing education efforts and demonstrates your initiative in acquiring additional training in diabetes self-management education. The certificate program can be used to set minimum training standards for DSMES program staff. The certificate program also is used by healthcare providers who are not looking for a career in diabetes care and education, but who find that they and/or their staff need more training in diabetes due to the increasing number of people with diabetes being seen in their practice.

You will have access to this learning activity for a period of six months after you enroll, or whenever the activity's CE credits expire (whichever comes first).

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

	American Academy of PAs (AAPA) The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 6.5 AAPA Category 1 CME credit(s). Approval is valid until 1/2/27. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.

Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) CDR Credentialed Practitioners will receive 6.5 Continuing Professional Education unit(s) (CPEU) for completion of this activity. Completion of this RD/DTR profession-specific or IPCE activity awards CPEUs (One IPCE credit = One CPEU). If the activity is dietetics-related but not targeted to RDs or DTRs, CPEUs may be claimed which are commensurate with participation in contact hours (One 60 minute hour = 1 CPEU. RDs and DTRs are to select activity type 102 in their Activity Log. Sphere and Competency selection is at the learner’s discretion.

Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) As a Jointly Accredited Organization, the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 6.5 continuing education credits.

Successful Completion

To receive a Statement of Credit you must participate in the full activity and complete an evaluation.

Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists

To satisfy the requirements for renewal of certification for the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE), continuing education activities must be diabetes related and approved by a provider on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers (www.cbdce.org). CBDCE does not approve continuing education. The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers.

Board Certified Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM)

ADCES is the administering body for the Advanced Diabetes Management credentials. Continuing education programs offered by ADCES can be used toward fulfilling BC-ADM Certification and recertification requirements.

Other Health Professionals

It is the responsibility of each participant to determine if the program meets the criteria for re-licensure or recertification for their discipline.

In accordance with Joint Accreditation criteria and the ACCME’s Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education, the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists (ADCES) must ensure that anyone in a position to control the content of the educational activity (planners and speakers/authors/discussants/moderators) has disclosed all relevant financial relationships with any ineligible companies for the past 24 months.

Joint Accreditation/ACCME also requires that ADCES mitigate any reported conflict and eliminate the potential for bias during the educational activity.
