DescriptionThis program will review the foundation, and statistics related to health literacy/numeracy. Health literacy components are multifactorial and include oral, eHealth and print literacy as well as cultural and conceptual knowledge. With the various medication delivery options, technology devices, and essential skills needed for dose calculations, people with diabetes can be directly impacted. Various tools and approaches will be shared to help diabetes care and education specialists navigate health literacy for optimal success.
Learning OutcomeDiabetes care and education specialists will report increased awareness of key health literacy considerations, particularly as they relate to diabetes, and will apply health literacy-sensitive approaches when working with individuals affected by the condition.
Learning ObjectivesAt the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
• Define health literacy and its key components.
• Discuss how health literacy affects health outcomes, self-management, and overall well-being in people with diabetes.
• Identify at least one effective communication strategy tailored for individuals with low health literacy.
