Dexcom unveiled its new Stelo continuous glucose monitor during the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference. The Stelo is based on Dexcom's G7 CGM and is specifically designed for individuals who do not take insulin. This product is part of Dexcom's ongoing efforts to cater to a broader range of patients.

The Stelo device features a sensor with a 15-day lifespan and comes equipped with custom software features tailored to the needs of individuals who don't require insulin. Dexcom recognizes that this demographic may not need the extensive alerts and alarms provided by their G7 series, and therefore, the Stelo device is designed to meet the specific requirements of this user group.

Initially, Dexcom plans to offer the Stelo as a cash-pay product. While specific pricing details were not disclosed, company executives emphasized that Dexcom aims to be competitive. Dexcom's long-term goal is to secure insurance coverage for the Stelo, but the pricing model in comparison to traditional CGMs remains uncertain. The company acknowledges the critical nature of intensive insulin therapy for some individuals and the importance of the Stelo in enhancing their health outcomes.

The announcement of the Stelo device comes at a time when competitor Abbott has introduced a direct-to-consumer program called Lingo, a CGM for people without diabetes. While Abbott's program is currently available in the U.K., the company has expressed intentions to file for approval in the U.S. by the end of 2023.
