There is a serious psychosocial problem occurring and it’s not something we can let slide. For too long there has been a stereotypical misconception about a person with diabetes (type 2 in particular, but the word is used ubiquitously). People with diabetes often hear that they are in fact at fault for the disease; through poor diet choices, sedentary lifestyle, etc. It’s time for diabetes educators to stand up for the entire diabetes population and disband the ignorance.

As I’ve been told (and experienced), life goes on. Our job, as Certified Diabetes Educators (CDEs) is to assist our clients to change in the direction of improvement. That direction is unique for each person which is often our biggest challenge – trying to discover what is the best direction for that individual.

Barriers to optimal diabetes management are complex and involve individual, community and health-system factors. The engagement of community health workers (CHWs) as a workforce is a proven strategy for improving diabetes outcomes. Not only do CHWs address individual-level factors, but often community-level factors and social determinants of health as well.

The collaboration between diabetes educators and community health workers provides a vehicle to address the social determinants of health by improving healthcare costs, increasing the capacity to serve, and most importantly engaging individuals in their health through evidence-based culturally grounded approaches.

Behavioral health is a foundation of diabetes management. We can have the best medications and technology, but if someone is not in an emotional place to utilize those resources appropriately, then their availability will not matter. Behavioral health simply cannot be ignored, which is why it is a pillar for the vision of the specialty.
