Featured Member - George "Joe" Trotter, Jr., BSN, RN, CDCES
George "Joe" Trotter, Jr., BSN, RN, CDCES has been a part of the ADCES® community for six years. He shares a wealth of insight on the importance of DCES’s in the diabetes community and the impact of ADCES.
Why do you love being a member?
I love the camaraderie of ADCES members who are so willing to share their knowledge, experience and insights within diabetes care and education. We learn much from each other and work tirelessly to advance diabetes care, management and education throughout the country. I'm honored to be a part of a caring, loyal and dedicated group of individuals that assist all people with diabetes.
What is your favorite part about being a diabetes care and education specialist?
My favorite part of being a DCES is learning from other DCES’s every day, but also from my patients living with diabetes. The resilience, victories and even struggles we each experience help me to grow as a DCES and share that knowledge and insight with others. I also enjoy sharing my personal story and insights as a nurse, CDCES and person living with Type 1 diabetes. It usually helps to ease some of the fears and concerns of others living with diabetes when I open up and discuss this with them. They don't feel so alone and feel that they are heard. The empathy and sharing are powerful.
Top five ADCES resources/programs?
The ADCES Annual Conference, ADCES Connect, ADCES In Practice Journal, Living with Diabetes resources on the ADCES website (I share these resources with patients to help guide their ongoing care and diabetes management) and danatech.
What is one piece of advice you would give to a new diabetes care and education specialist or someone considering the profession?
Always listen to your patient, learn from them and others within our specialty, grow in your local, state, national practice and involvement with diabetes care and education, continue to educate those with diabetes, their family/friends/caregivers and those without diabetes about the importance of self-care and ongoing support, and always be compassionate and caring with your approach to your patients. The concern you show and knowledge you share mean so much.
